In all the years I’ve been sewing bridal and other garments, I’ve had yet to master the installation of a zipper into a lined garment where the lining was sewn to the zipper by machine. I’m not sure why this was such a difficult thing to sink into my sewing brain, but alas – I finally figured it out! Many of you may already know how to do this, but for those of us who don’t, here are some basic instructions…

After installing the zipper into the main fabric, sew the lining to the zipper, right sides together. Be sure to leave the lining about 1/4 inch out from the main fabric. THIS IS THE KEY!

Then, fold the zipper back on itself, making sure the lining is pulled straight out (not folded). Sew the waist seam.

Turn the garment inside out and voila! A professionally installed zipper with machine sewn lining!
