Swimsuit Sew-Along!

Happy Friday everyone! If you follow my facebook page, you know I just finished making a swimsuit. There are a lot of things I like about sewing but probably up near the top is the ability to make my own swimsuits. I haven’t purchased a swimsuit in YEARS. I’m not sure of the order, but…

Happy Friday everyone! If you follow my facebook page, you know I just finished making a swimsuit. There are a lot of things I like about sewing but probably up near the top is the ability to make my own swimsuits. I haven’t purchased a swimsuit in YEARS. I’m not sure of the order, but here are a few I’ve made throughout the years:

KwikSew 3239 was the first suit I made. I found the brown and green print on Ebay. This one has padding in the bust and a lower U back and I cut the bottoms to be low rise.

McCall’s 5400 was next. I got a real kick out the fabric I found, also on ebay I believe. This one has a cute little tie at the bust and a halter neckline.

Next I made Burdastyle’s Alison. Loved the retro style of this one. It has a similar tie at the bust like the previous suit, but it’s sewn in, whereas the McCall’s tie is a real, separate tie. I posted it on burdastyle here if you want to see it on – that was when I was young and had fewer kids.

The 2nd KwikSew 3239 I made for my anniversary. Nuff said. haha.

The KwikSew 3779 is my most recent make and it’s really great for camouflaging mommy belly.

I don’t know if this video by modest swimsuit designer Jessica Rey has been blowing up your facebook feed, but I know a lot of my friends were liking, reposting and nodding in agreement with her and the desire for a more modest swimsuit. I’ve seen so many retro patterns popping up to support this more modest swimsuit trend, but whatever your style, I thought it’d be fun to host a Swimsuit Sew-Along and help you take the dive into making your own suit!!

I will go into more detail in future posts as we really get started, but I want to encourage you that if you’re thinking at all of doing this with us, YOU CAN DO IT. All you need is:

  • a sewing machine that has a zigzag stitch (I have some to share)
  • some ballpoint needles to use with your sewing machine
  • straight pins
  • scissors
  • a pattern and the right materials to make your swimsuit

You can make this for you, for your daughter, grand daughter, any woman in your life who would enjoy a custom-made swimsuit. And I’ll be helping you every step of the way.

I’ll start with some introductory posts to get you up to speed on what you need to know and what supplies you need to collect and then we’ll set a date to get together and SEW! Bring the kids – we’ll put on a movie and let them play. So comment below to let me know you’re on board and stay tuned for the next post!

  1. I’m on board. I’ve been wanting to sew a suit, but haven’t mustered up the guts yet. Here it goes…

  2. I am hoping to follow along. I am very inexperienced at sewing, but am in desperate need of a swimsuit (it doesn’t really seem that’s there is anything in stores that suits shape AND budget.)

  3. I was already planning on sewing a swimsuit – one for me and one for Claire. I’ll be following along because I can use all the advice you can give me! 🙂
